Emily
I am a teacher who believes in education through play. I know young children to be naturally curious and capable explorers of their physical and social worlds. As they mess about and generate questions, they develop new understandings and abilities. I believe school should be a common place for this wondering and tinkering to take place in community. Education must be an experience filled with love and joy for children and adults alike.
I became a mom in September 2021 when my baby, Chester, was born. I had been teaching 4- to 6-year olds at Lincoln Nursery School. I absolutely loved the mixed-age program that I developed with my co-teacher there. This work inspired me as I envisioned what I could offer a group of children at my home in Malden.
I began teaching young children in 2007 as a part of the Amherst, MA public summer preschool program. It was there I first learned from seasoned teachers how to create loving learning environments for preschoolers with both typical needs and those with special rights. I fell in love with the work and while an undergraduate in college I sought out a work-study job at the Brown/Fox Point Early Childhood Education Center as an assistant teacher. While working there I earned my B.A. in Education Studies from Brown University. Upon graduating I moved to the Boston area and worked as a nanny for a 2-year-old and an infant and later became a kindergarten paraprofessional in a Cambridge public school. In May 2015, I earned a master’s degree in Child Study and Human Development from Tufts University. During my graduate studies I supported lead teachers at the Eliot-Pearson Children’s School at Tufts University as well as Charlestown Nursery School. In September 2015 I began work as a co-lead teacher at Lincoln Nursery School, a Reggio-Inspired program on the grounds of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. I worked there for six years.
Beginning in September of 2021 I enjoyed a year of maternity leave to care for my son. It was soon after my husband and I began to look into options for child care, that I started to envision a program of my own. Beginning a school is a dream I have been cultivating in the back of my mind and I was thrilled to finally make it a reality to begin the 2022 school year. Now that I am a mom, I understand even more deeply the trust parents place in me when leaving their children in my care.
